Lost in translation

In the Dutch art scene and education system, the use of the English is as common as Dutch. I did my MA art degree in English, worked in English speaking art collaborations and did most of my art writing in English – all whilst living in the Netherlands. The words ‘kunst’ and ‘art’ became interchangeable to me. After 3,5 years living in the UK (where I hardly use the word ‘kunst’), this is no longer true. ‘Kunst’ does not have the same meaning as ‘art’ anymore. It’s an open word, ready to receive my new interpretations, suddenly more associated with being Dutch than ever. What could ‘kunst’ be?
